7 Common DIY split installation mistakes

  1. No space for air circulation on outdoor unit
  2. Condensation drain and wiring unsecured
  3. Doesn't use a/c specific wall brackets
  4. Bent/crushed connecting pipes
  5. Places condensing unit on bricks or in garden bed
  6. Uneven mounting of indoor unit
  7. Purge lines and doesn't evacuate line below 500 microns or leak test flares.
  8. Doesn't run a separate power circuit when required.
  9. Doesn't fit an isolator where required.

If you’d like to go for the professional installation route, below are a few questions you may have:

Case study: Split system ok or not?

I live in a house with an existing Fujitsu split system A/C unit and a friend has told me the installation is illegal. The unit has no isolator switch on the outside wall, but has a switch on a double power point that isolates the power.

It must be connected to the power point circuit as the power circuit breaker at the small switchboard cuts the power to the power point and the air conditioning unit.

This is a common problem of DIY installations. It can be done by looking at the manual or watching YouTube. But how do you know if it’s been done right?

Here are a few common split installation mistakes to look out for if you decide to go down the DIY route.

You deserve to have your split installed at a reasonable price knowing the install is done neatly, correctly, and safely.

Why is my split system only cooling on hot days?
If you have a split that blows cool air when it's about 30°C or above outside but not when the outside temp drops below 30°C (normally at night), you may have a dirty filter. Dirty filters are the cause of most problems with splits.

They were very efficient & i’m pleased with the job they did. I work so a trade that turns up on time & does the job properly is always going to be what impresses me! I would highly recommend S.O.S Electrical to others!
